What is our laminated birch plywood made from?
Our Baltic birch plywood is constructed by layering thin, solid-sheet birch veneers with alternating grain directions and bonding them with moisture resistant adhesives under intense heat and pressure. This method produces an exceptionally strong, void-free, stable and moisture resistant panel with a beautiful, striped edge detail.
Laminate and Ply only use FSC certified birch solid, single-piece veneers throughout the entire panel.
Veneers are stacked with the grain direction of each consecutive layer running perpendicular (at a 90° angle) to the layer below it. This cross-grain pattern counters the wood’s natural tendency to expand, contract, and warp, resulting in high structural stability.
Panels are always constructed with an odd number of layers (e.g., 13, or 27 plies). This ensures the panel stays balanced and warp-resistant.
Thinner Core Plies: Our Baltic birch ply has thin individual core plies (typically around 1 to 1.5 mm thick)
High Pressure Laminate (HPL) is a highly durable, decorative surface material. Highly resistant to impact, scratching, staining, heat and moisture. It is easy to wipe clean. Made by fusing multiple layers of resin-impregnated kraft paper under high heat and pressure.
It is constructed of the following:
- FSC certified impregnated soda kraft paper: Layers of kraft paper soaked in phenolic resin for strength and flexibility.
- Impregnated decorative paper: printed paper providing colour, woodgrain, or patterns, treated with melamine resin.
- Overlay: A clear protective layer for wear and impact resistance.
The end result is a beautiful durable furniture board, with the clean line edge detail of the ply combined with the moisture and impact resistance of high pressure laminate.
